Technicaly, he didn't have a choice, he had to swear loyalty... Also, it says in the book that he betrayed the varden, but he was never really WITH the varden. I think it's more the Varden that betrayed him... I love him, he's sooooo cute! I really hope he isn't killed in the fourth book!
