nicholson played playwright Eugene O'Neill, who had an affair with Louise Bryant (Keaton) during her relationship with John Reed (Beatty). ONeill, Bryant & Reed were all in their mid-20's at the time; it was years before ONeill became well-known for his plays. (Reed's fame came from his book of the russian revolution "10 Days that Shook the World" I've always wondered (and tried to find) it ONeill ever did write that love poem to Bryant..
"I'll do anything that you say. I'd like to kill ya but I cant...... so you can do whatever you want to, except for not see me." I absolutely love that line, it's genius.
