I've never even heard of this instrument before today. I understand it's been around hundreds of yrs. before the violin. It's an amazing piece of engineering and you play it beautifully. Well done.

I've been around a ton of bowed instrument players, (mostly the violin, frankly) and I'd like to ask a rather simple question:

Why can't the bow be simply drawn back and forth for its whole length, to play the strings? Does there HAVE to be points at which the direction of the string is interrupted other than for the end of the stroke?

The bow can be drawn in its full length but it has a different sound. Generally for bars of quick notes, they'll be performed in one stroke, although not always. A good example of this is with chromatic scales over 2 octaves when changing bowing direction for each note is not necessary, and not practicle if you wish to perform the scale at any pace.
Bowing is part of the interpretation of the peice of music and can totally change the over all feel.
