Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I really like those 60's R&B sounds like Wilson Pickett, Booker T. & the MG's of course Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards too. I've noticed they all seem to use much of the same scale sounds. I recently saw a local guitarist jamming this music at a club and he only used a small shape around each chord to add fills and to solo. He sounded great, in fact -- he sounded quite a lot like Jimi Hendrix. Is there a certain magic shape Hendrix and other guitar players in this style use to play riffs and to solo around a songs' chords?
- Brodie, LasVegas Nevada.

A: Classic R&B and Rock N Roll from the 60's had a nice way of adding in cool filler notes around chord changes. A good deal of these notes were from the pentatonic scale. But, rather than playing the scale as it would likely be shown in most guitar lesson books, many of these players used compact 5-Note shapes. There were usually clustered around those standard Major & Dominant chord voicings found off of 6th & 5th string roots.

  • All-inspiring...is what you are, Andrew! Can't thank you enough! You have a real flair for not only playing, but conveying what you do in a manner that even a klutz like me can grasp. A gazillion thanks! :D)

  • @mpm111144,

    Thank you very much.

    All the best,

    Andrew Wasson

  • Darn it Andrew, with each lesson I get more amazed of your excellence of musical knowledge and theory. Is it ever gonna end ? I certainly hope not ! You keep popping up these videos for free, learning me every week something new. Knowledge and theory is VERY IMPORTANT if you wanna progress through guitar playing quickly, as wel as expending your horizon. With your lessons I can do that and can't thank you enough for that, doing it for free.

  • @NewMetallica

Thanks dude! It sure makes it a lot easier when so many viewers are sending great questions to me each day. If I had to invent topics, I'm sure this would be a lot more difficult... I just regret that as I get more popular on YouTube (and the amount of questions sent into the studio continue to increase), I can't answer/reply to each question. Hopefully, what I do manage to create here helps the majority of viewers who watch!

Thanks for all of the solid support!

    - Andrew Wasson

  • Do you actually pinch the chords with your fingers AND pick the 6th string? If so, is there some kind of exercice for that? thanks a lot great video

  • 0 dislikes FTW :D !

  • I've been using these concepts for two years straight, but Andrew helps solidify the knowlege into something far less abstract. Anybody looking to learn theory, I'd automatically reccommend this guy. Brilliant, easy-to-understand. It's about time advanced players get a great freebie on YouTube. Keeps it all the more interesting. Gratze.

  • this is one of the most important lessons u will ever get! took me a long time to figure this kind if stuff out.

  • Great Stuff Andrew, You make things very clear, thank you

  • @TheAnshumanarya AGREE and LOVE your comment.

Andrew is of both minor and MAJOR help.

    He's the best ive seen.

  • does these shapes only work for major chords?

  • Never change the videos Andrew. They are probably the best I have seen on the net. Keep making handouts, they are definitely definitely worth it.
