Peter Robinson, Hoover research fellow, interviews Paul Rahe on Hoover's vidcast program, Uncommon Knowledge. Rahe holds the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in Western Heritage at Hillsdale College and he is the author most recently of Soft Despotism, Democracys Drift.
Rahe make many good points here. His (or Montesquie's?) point about virtue being a driving force for republics is interesting. Virtue meaning that you see service in government as an obligation to be carried out for the good of the country, not as a career or as a means to enrich yourself. George Washington retiring to his farm is an excellent example of true Republican virtue. America's modern political class seems to seldom rise to this level.
