Panic disorder is a psychological state that results to panic or anxiety attacks. This becomes a problem when it starts to interfere with a person's ability in dealing with daily activities. A lot of panic attack medications such as anti-depressants can be used to stop panic episodes while alternatives to treat panic attacks are also available. Let us take a look at some of the possible treatments available.

There are medications which can lessen a panic attack's severity; this can also stop a panic attack from happening. Paroxetine and sertraline, are kinds of anti-depressants that can prevent panic attacks effectively. These kinds of medication can stop panic attacks from happening again and their side effects are mild. Anti-depressants may be used for long periods of time.

Clonazepam and alprazolam, are kinds of benzodiazepines, used in the treatment of panic disorder. Taking these medicines can provide immediate relief from panic and anxiety, however; excessive use of these may lead to substance abuse. Prescription for the use of these kinds of medicine is limited to a few days to a week.

Medication can be an effective way to treat panic attacks, but one must realize relying on medicine more often than necessary can lead to an addiction. This can become a whole new problem that may prove detrimental in treating panic disorder.

Going through counseling can be a good alternative in treating panic attacks. Going through therapy can also be an alternative in treating panic disorder. An example of which is cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). This kind of treatment tries to locate the cause of the panic attack, and replaces the triggering factors with positive substitutes. Cognitive behavior therapy focuses in pin-pointing the thinking or behavioral pattern which causes the panic attack from occurring.

Interoceptive exposure therapy can be another form of treatment that works wonderfully. This kind of therapy activates the panic attack on purpose so that the therapist can demonstrate that no harm is inflicted to the person going through a panic attack. This may look like a risky procedure but, this has been proven to be an effective and natural way to treat panic disorder.

Stress is one of the primary causes of a panic attack and getting rid of it can help in alleviating the disorder. Relaxation techniques can be an ideal way to control panic attacks. Doing yoga, breathing exercises and meditation can help eliminate stress.

Caffeine and sugar should also be avoided, since these have stimulants that can make a person feel irritable and nervous and this may trigger a panic attack.

Natural supplements can also be effective in treating panic attacks. Taking herbal medicine and vitamin supplements like B-vitamins can have a calming after effect which can lessen the possibility of a panic episode.

  • The vast majority of newer "short-acting" Benzodiazepines as Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin (Clozanepam), cause hideous withdrawal effects for the majority of long-term users trying to get off their benzos in less stressful times. Search "Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome" on Wikipedia. The pharmaceutical companies earn profits exceeding 300 BILLION dollars yearly from psychotropic drug sales, and one hunderd million in marketing, to ease concers of doctors (mostly GP's), who prescribe them most.
