To view more mini-films visit http://www.vega.org.uk/video/subseries/27 Converting wind power into electricity seems like an ideal way of helping to solve our energy problems. Here we demonstrate three different types of home made electricity generating windmills.

  • its like an optical illusion :D

  • yep, if you stare at a windmill whizzing around for a few mins and then look away at things (like trees and posts) they look very perculiar ... like they are bending ... something to do with the way the eye and mind process the visual information. Jonathan

  • Very cool! Anywhere I can download schematics for these?

  • @SocialistDemocracy I used the very powerful 'rare earth' magnets (only strong magnets will create a decent voltage in my simple generator design). See my web site for details.

  • @VegaScienceTrust Hey i love your videos. I was just wondering what the strength and size of the magnets you recommend to use that create 5V. How long do you think they will stay magnetized ?

  • how did u build it e-mail me kameronpark@hotmail.com thx

  • brilliant video

  • love the video really good

  • really nice work.

  • small dc motor would make mutch more power i did that at school and almost got 9 volt from it

  • @VegaScienceTrust Some years back, I made a voltage regulator for a machine much like what you show at 1:38. One problem with this sort of generator is that a strong wind tries to blow them over. It get worse when the generator is turning. With it stopped, the wing is stalled and there is a smaller constant force on the axle instead of the big pulse when it is at speed. It used the trick of putting a big load on the generator to stall it out.
