NJIT 24 Hour Hackathon2011

NJIT's 24 hour Hackathon took place from noon on Sat, Feb 5, to 4 pm on Sun, Feb 6 in Campus Center Ballrooms A and B. Student teams competed against each other to develop apps using data from web APIs from NJIT and Elsevier.

The contest included building apps in three categories.

First place: $1,500
Second place: $1,000
Third place: $500

NJIT's Hackathon 2011 was a rousing success. After 28 hours of coding, our winners emerged:

First place: The team of Jesse Campbell (graduate student in computer science from Wallington, NJ) and Metin Yorulmaz (graduate student in computer science from Rutherford, NJ) for their project "SV Social" -- which lets SciVerse users to mark articles as favorites, share them with friends in other social networks, and converts text to speech

Second place: The team of Andy Contreras (senior in IT multimedia from Newark, NJ) and John Lin (graduate student in computer science from Newark, NJ) for their project "Research Driftr" -- which places scientific papers onto a map of the world corresponding to the university where the research was done built as a mashup between data from the SciVerse Applications and Google Maps API

Third place: David Daudelin (junior in computer science from Hackettstown, NJ) for his project "RoboVisor" -- an automated student advising system built from NJIT open data sources

Two honorable mentions:

The team of Grant Butler (first year computer science major from Teaneck, NJ) and Joe Pasqualetti (first year computer science major from Rome, NY) for an attempt to build a SciVerse iPad app

And, finally, the team of Kylych Tynybekov (junior computer science major from Jersey City, NJ), Kirill Vainer (senior computer science major from Fairlawn, NJ), and Max Shvets (senior computer science major from Rockaway, NJ) for mapping a student's courses onto a 3d representation of NJIT's campus

Our students came up with many creative ideas for how to use both the SciVerse Application and NJIT's open data source. All were exposed to real-world open APIs and stepped up their game during the intense weekend-long competition.
