according to ITSF rules, the time does not pause when the ball goes off the table it goes to one of the goalies with a full 15 second time - time should pause if the ball is out of reach. - that's one thing the app does not do.
-
If the ball flies off the table, the clock needs to be reset but also paused, without it counting as a time out. Without the pause button that would effect the stats for avg time of possession, right?

that would be so helpful lol

apple provides its own set of tools called the iPhone SDK. It comes with a IDE called Xcode, that allows you to program your app in Objective C (new to me), and provides an interface builder to lay down the buttons and stuff.
It only works for the Mac, so i got a Mac Mini, and hooked it up to mt tv - and remote desktop (via tightVNC) to the mac from my pc (cause i'm too cheap to buy another mouse and keyboard)
Good idea but the ref would need to look at the phone to click the right button.
This would be ideal if you could program the timers to start when say the 1 button is pushed down for the 10s and the 3 button for the 15s (or pick any two). Timing automatically resets when the button is released, eliminating the need for two xtra buttons. Also, the ref wouldn't have to look away from the table.
(My hand-held timer design works this way - I lost interest building them for such a tiny market)

ps - Anything that allows the ref to actuate a timer without having to look away from table play is ideal. The switch would have to be mechanical and not needing to click a screen.
If the mechanical buttons could be utilized, a ref could hold the iphone in one hand and keep two fingers on the two timing buttons - the index finger would start the 10s and the middle the 15s by pressing them down. Auto-reset is best by simply releasing the button. (A battery drain test would be necessary)

yea i'll have to look into this auto-reset on button up and down, as its a foreign concept to me, but willing to give it a try - not sure i agree with the stance that touch screens force people to look down. once your given the feedback that you've pressed the button, you'll start to trust it.

After a bit of practice the ref will get used to knowing where the buttons are - and they won't have to look down to know if they pressed the right button. .the colored flashes will give them that feedback without taking their eye off play. at least that's the goal - we'll see if it works for others.

how about a rules module? ideally one could "pause", go search/read the rules, and return to the main screen in paused-mode.

yea, i'm even considering including a 'situation- find out the penalty kind of lookup' we'll see - that's far down the list. - but a link to the ITSF rule book is in for sure in v2
