The Ballad of Susan Smith by Lee Ann Brown

In 1994, Susan Smith, a young South Carolina mother, eased her car down a slope into a lake, drowning her two toddler sons who were secured in the car's child safely seats. She claimed that the vehicle with her sons inside was carjacked a black man. After weeks of a nationwide manhunt for that ficticious man, she confessed to the crime. In this film, North Carolina born New York poet Lee Ann Brown sings in a clear and lovely voice what she calls a modern cruel mother ballad. "The Ballad of Susan Smith" chronicles this contemporary crime in the topical and formal fashion of an old Appalachin folk tune. Set to a film composed of only four still images by Tim Main, 2005.

Diane Downs shot her children and blamed it on a shaggy haired stranger for the same reason, lover didn't want children. Tragicically she still maintains innocence a decade later. One of the children survived.
