@seonidh In the 19thC people wrote songs and pretended they were old. In the 20thC folk revival certain people took old songs out of copyright and slapped copyright on them pretending they wrote them. Rod Stewart slapped a copyright on this too probably not realising that McPeake had beaten him to it :-) McPeake seems to have done no more than make an arrangement of the base song whcih as you say was Scottish.
@gtsju words and song were actually a scottish song written in the 18th century. Mcpeak only tweeked the words and kept the original theme. Might I add that if you want to claim this song then Danny Boy was witten by an English man to an irish song
