The Institute for the Future, a Palo Alto based nonprofit research group, held a day long research exchange titled "The Future of Video." During the Q&A of the "Authorship, Appropriation, and Control" panel, creative genius Ze Frank responds critically to the utility of Creative Commons for guys like him. Ze feels that others rip off his work, make less quality derivative works and profit from them at his expense. Panelist David Pescovitz of BoingBoing and IFTF, argues for CC with counter examples and panelist Alexander Cohen, Professor of Film Studies at UC Bereley, also argues for the utility of CC for emerging artists being able to remix content. Leprechans enter the story as well.

  • When I saw SXEPhil the first thing I said out loud was....

    Hardcharger?

Look at Apple, their biggest asset is not innovation, or creativity, it's marketing. When it comes down to it you are either the artisan who creates great works of art, or you are the man who profits. A balance is hard to maintain.

The Show was amazing, and ahead of it's time. Do be proud, you created something that made a lot of people happy, and allowed them to connect with one another.

  • As a creative person you should profit, but then again you're not on Youtube, The Show has ended, and you're going conference to conference performing for people who don't have nearly as much talent as you do.

If money is an issue stick a few donation links, put a small add here and there, or just whore your content out.

In the end Sportsracers love you, and no matter how many CC's come after Knowledge doesn't decrease in value, it only becomes harder to sell.

  • One things for sure, no one saw Keyboard Cat coming! Play it again!

  • @kiyka SXEPhil should be called SekZePhrank

  • I agree with Keyboard Cat's statement on the matter of DMCA

  • lol i did not expect keyboard cat

  • @SimpleTwistFilms I don't see the similarity in voice style. Regarding sharp cuts, I also consider this a product of the medium. Phil has said himself that the reason he had the cuts was because he couldn't smoothly deliver a line without stuttering. I've find this to be an inevitability when making my own videos as well. Ze's cuts are more deliberate, as he doesn't seem to have trouble delivering a line.

I still haven't seen anything that indicates Phil is a copycat. Inspired, yes.

  • @kadavy I think he's referring to the voice style - trying to comment on the news - and the sharp cuts as well. He's talking about going overboard to create successful content - by imitation & blatant copying. DeFranco is in short a profiting copycat that couldn't creatively come up with his "own" style & format so he basically recreated "the show"

There is a big difference from creating something new based on inspiration which has similarities but truly adds something new to the mix...

  • as far as creative commons go and copy right's,

when I have a song or idea that I present with windows movie maker 2.6

I take footage and jpg's from many different places and try to put them all together to represent the idea of the song. Lots of people used songs from other artists while presenting things like make up tutorials or dance steps or what ever, so I think as long as a person does not claim they did 100 percent of the production, and explain various sources that's good.

  • now watch some one do a clip of "keyboard dog" and say "it was so my idea first guy"

  • I lost all respect I once had for Hosea after seeing this. To think that making a moderately interesting and funny vlog for only one year suddenly makes you the infallible lord and master of the concepts of snarky news commentary and having in-jokes with your viewers is the epitome of egotism. He's just butthurt about other vloggers existing after his 15 minutes have ended.
