Metal Machine Music may be that rarest of things: a flop that was intended to be a flop. The theory is that Lou Reed was anxious to get out of his contract with RCA and so deliberately made an album that was unlistenable commercial suicide. Four untitled 16 minute tracks over 4 sides of vinyl, the album collected screeching looped guitar feedback, ending on an "infinite loop". Reed denies it was a stunt, he says he was "stoned".
