What a mess! Video is of a total bag lock malfunction and cut away while jumping at Skydive Burnaby. Fortunately the jump ended with a safe landing under reserve. Unfortunately, the main, free bag and pilot chute were all lost in a corn field.

  • So, after reviewing the video many many times it appears that a toggle became unstowed and wrapped around the bag. One riser had pressure and the other was slack (the one still stowed). I cut it away and never saw my stuff again. I packed it myself like I did the previous 1500 jumps, but it sure was ugly when I saw it, but I knew I couldn't keep it. Alls well that ends well.

  • @741741 I lost a free bag in a wheat field. I looked for an entire day and finally gave up. I saw approximately where it landed but unless you walk directly on top of it you would never see it. Some farmer was pissed when it got tangled up in his machinery later that year. I asked where he found it and it was in the middle of my search grid.

  • @Dortmunderhonk in >95% situations gear is found. Falling chute ( after cut away ) is a big rag ( good seen from below ). If You cut away near a DZ usually someone is going to find a missing gear. If a cut away was on high altitude ( +600m ) You have enough time to fly after Your gear and get it by Yourself. Gear cost too much to let it "lost". Personally I saw many cut aways - only in one case canopy was lost ( gone in a field - 2 days of searching, even pilots looking for it - and NOTHING )

  • @Neosano

    Indeed :S

  • You should have tried pumping the brakes.

  • @Dortmunderhonk You can insure parachutes under home owner's insurance as sporting equipment.

  • @tweet3037 Home owner's insurance classifies parachutes as sport equipment, and can be covered in case of a lost cutaway. I know a guy who did just that.

  • i have a question im a noob I just did a tandemjump 2009 but if you cut away yor main canopy does it mean that you throw away 1000-2000 € or $

what is youre main aim after you land? do you try to follow the fall of the main chute during reserve flight ? Or do you have to accept that the chute is lost for ever when you cut off in high altitude? dont get a bad oppinon about me of cause it ist the biggest thing and you are thankfull that you are alive :-)

  • holy cow, that was low

  • What kind of toggle stowing method do your risers have? Velcro? Also, in your description you call it a total mal, but a bag lock is only a partial mal. Good work saving your ass!!!!!!

  • @divepromichael1 rofl but so true!
