I'm a huge fan of Berio but I fail to see how you can not the find the fact he uses a clown even slightly amusing - even if you're taking it seriously. Not my favourite sequenza because I think others, like XII, say more musically than this does dressed up (I am aware that XII is perhaps a bad example as it's the longest lol).

I don't think for one minute that it's easy to write - just as it isn't easy to produce a work of contemporary fine art. People sometimes say a "child could do that". I don't believe this for one minute. It's a separate issue as to whether the work has any intrinsic aesthetic value.

I think it's impossible to 'demonstrate' this, although we can theorise about it. I do think a knowledge of intention enters into an understanding of any musical work but I don't think a knowledge of biography, sexual preference, etc is relevant. It was a long time before I knew Samuel Barber was gay my new knowledge of his sexual preference doesn't alter my perception of his music. I understand what you're saying though.
