When I found myself playing the rhythm in the song "I want to be in America" from "West Side Story," I figured there had to be a name for it, musically. Sure enough... Hemiola.

  • This is a great series of videos - it's great to see something that spans from the very basics to more complex techniques. Just furthering the information on hemiolas - a hemiola is actually when you play a rhythm specific to a certain time signature over a different time signature (really hard to explain). So for example, if you played a 3/4 rhythm (eg. 2 dotted quarter notes) over a song in 4/4 time.

  • tak-ka-ta tak-ka-ta tak-ka tak-ka - Good stuff!
