  • nice dogs :)

german shepards by far my favourite breed of dog

just not so keen on the overly sloping back on these.....

    is that just me?

  • yea i hear you there.... i prefer the old style dogs ( more square if you get me). Do you know why they bred this characteristic into the breed (or just further accentuated it ) ? You're not allowed to show long haired GSD's cause it affects their ability to work. The slanty backed leads to all sorts of orthapedic problems in the future - hip displasia etc - surely that affects their ability to work as well.... so why do breeders look for the slanty backs ?

  • They aren't standing up all the way, its a pose.

  • @whatajapan The dogs pictured are all stacked. Put a mastiff or lab in the same pose and their back will slope too, that's just the physics involved when you keep front legs straight and bend the hind legs. You can't tell the condition of a dog's back till you see it standing square

  • @PhleshWound I know the breed standard, so I don't need to read it.I know that a double coat is required.I have no idea why you are disagreeing with me when we both know that their coat doesn't effect health, temperament or working ability.I even said that LCs don't have a double in some of my posts.

  • @JessieAckles Jessie, you are simply NOT reading me correctly. The Standard calls for a double coat so the dog can work outdoors in German winters, as they were designed to do. A dog without a double coat is flawed - it's right there, the very last line of the breed standard. If you're not familiar with the breed standard, then I recommend you read it and educate yourself, rather than remaining wilfully ignorant. It's nothing to do with physical ability, it's a requirement of the Standard.

  • My girl is what many have commented to saying she looks similar to the original GSD.My other is rather a "plush coat".Just because a GSD has a long coat it does NOT effect their working ability.I know people who do herding with their Long coats and have received titles.Being a Long coat does NOT effect health either.

  • @PhleshWound Just because a GSD has a long coat it does NOT effect their working ability.I know many people who have Long Coated GSDs and the dogs do just fine. They will be accepted into the SV standard soon(or they already are).Just because YOU haven't seen one, doesn't mean are not any.Yes some don't have an undercoat, because their coat is so long, but some do have an undercoat.Being a long coated GSD does NOT EFFECT THEIR WORKING ABILITY.

  • @JessieAckles I disagree, Jessie. These dogs were designed to work outdoors in a German winter, hence the double coat. I've never seen a long coat GSD with a double coat. Coat condition makes no difference to their ability to do police or military work, to round up sheep or work as sniffer/rescue dogs, but the breed requirement is for a double coat, suitable for working outdoors in GERMAN winters. You don't have to like the fact, but it's true.

  • @PhleshWound A Long coated GSD working ability does not affect the dog's working ability and Long coat GSDs have a double coat.A Long Coated GSD is a GSD.They are going to be accepted or already are in Germany.THe fact a GSD maybe long haired does not effect its health, temperment, or working ability.

  • @JessieAckles Work, for a GSD is the ability to work outdoors in German winters, hence the breed standard requirement for a double coat, which long-coats don't have.
