A recording of the Michaelstein Telemann Chamber Orchestra at St. Mary's Church, Mühlhausen.

5. Air [A]:

Durch mächtige Kraft
Erhältst du unsre Grenzen,
Hier muss der Friede glänzen,
Wenn Mord und Kriegessturm
Sich allerort erhebt.
Wenn Kron und Zepter bebt,
Hast du das Heil geschafft
Durch mächtige Kraft!

6. Chorus:

Du wollest dem Feinde nicht geben die Seele deiner Turteltauben.

7. Chorus [Tutti]:

Das neue Regiment
Auf jeglichen Wegen
Bekröne mit Segen!
Friede, Ruh und Wohlergehen,
Müsse stets zur Seite stehen
Dem neuen Regiment.

Glück, Heil und großer Sieg
Muss täglich von neuen
Dich, Joseph, erfreuen,
Dass an allen Ort und Landen
Ganz beständig sei vorhanden
Glück, Heil und großer Sieg!

In Mühlhausen, Bach worked at the "Divi Blasii" church, but had much better conections to the nearby St. Mary's Church, where the preacher Georg Christian Eilmar was a great admirer of Bach's music. St. Mary's, Thuringia's second biggest church (is a fünfschiffige Hallenkirche), was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and was made famous through the activities of Thomas Müntzer in 1525.

Bach's working life in the Reichs city of Mühlhausen in 1707-08 - brief though it was - yielded important church music compositions. To mark the Council Election he composed this cantata, which was performed in St. Mary's Church on 4th February 1708.

The Telemann Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1952 by Eitelfriedrich Thom. It devotes itself chiefly to performing works by unknown composers of the 16th to 18th centuries in the middle German region. The orchestra uses historical instruments.

  • Just letting you know that when I was helping with the production of this video performance the recorders at time index 1:08 had to wait twenty minutes for the echo of the previous movement to subside and fade away. 20 MINUTES!! That church caused to many echo problems for us and the crew!

  • so hat einer bock bisschen zu quatschen ihr werdets warscheinlich nicht bereuen

wow i didnt know bach was from before medievel era

  • Does someone know the name of the man who sings in the starting of this vid?

  • @gerubach72 Woooow 20 minutes?? You know, this is so interesting thing :D

  • This cantata is virtually unknown in the US. A beautiful performance. The sheer size of the Marienkirche, Muehlhausen, and the building's echo, produce a sound I have never heard before from a cantata. It is wonderful music, and it prompts me to include Muehlhausen in a trip to Germany.

  • Thank you so much, most beautiful recording I've heard in years. All musicians wonderful, brass section gave me goosebumps all over my body and tears in my eyes, magnificent! Thanks God for Bach!!

  • This cantata was conducted by Bach himself in 1079 in Mülhausen, it was a succesfull performance.

  • Awesome!!! Just absolutely bloody awesome!! Listening to Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi and Handel makes it so hard for me to get back into the 21st Century's music. Food for the soul is the only way I can descibe this. Thankyou soooooo much for this vid!!

  • @gerubach72

The audio was recorded from there too?

Why the camera is moving from side to side during almost all the “film”.

Or at leas the first part is moving (I think that kind of movement is called Pan isn`t it?) and It’s getting me dizzy :P

  • "Das neue Regiment" mag ich :)
