Weatherconditions were very bad. It was pitch dark with heavy rainfall. The crew had made a mistake. The ILS were out of service because of maintenance. The ATC told them that Glideslope was unuseable but as the receiver got a false signal they dicussed about if it is working or not. So they decended below glideslope. As the GPWS sounded and warned them about their altitude they lost time in searching for the runway instead of going around. So they crashed. Fatigue of the crew was contributing.

I just don't understand why ATC cleared them for an ILS approach instead of LOC approach if the GS was inop

There were contributing factors, there's no doubt about that, but ultimately this was a textbook CFIT accident. The pilot knew he was below decision height, he had his crew telling him what he had to do, and he hesitated. He broke one of the fundamental rules of flight, and the cost was paid in human lives.

@themightyjfox Or they were tricked into trusting a faulty instrument deliberately.

    There are no coincidences.

He should have lit the afterburners. That's what Maverick would have done.

@Dooly95 i know this was posted long time ago!..... but when an airport reports an system INOP! doesn't matter what signal your are getting, you don't rely on the reading! and use it as your means of guidence! ( i was in the airline maintence field )

I already mentioned that crash in my comment above... Just take a look. It´s right above your comment. That was a prime example for human factors in a planecrash, that´s right.

The worst accident in history was on Tenneriffa. Same thing. But it can still happen on a flight with an american or any other crew. That´s all I´am saying. I know, culture has a role. But the flightcrews did not want to loose their lifes. So ?!

When I say it wouldn't have happened to an U.S flight crew I was being flippant. I meant as a cultural thing. The nature of Korean airs heirachical captains and the nature of korean culture meant that the crew were afraid to challenge the captain despite giving warnings about the weather and having the chance to take over the controls. Korean captains previous to the crash had been observed slapping flight crew, A U.S flight crew wouldn't take shit from a control tower or captain
