  • my grandmother was the first aid attendent out there years ago i havent been back to port in years

  • Haha! I just took the first aid level 3 course from her in February.

  • Yeah, and pictures of lots of them, too. I'll have to post some stills.

  • Right after we got this bed, the gooseneck broke off while transporting an 044. The foreman said it was quite a sight, watching the grapple yarder almost stand on end! Wish somebody got that on video! The 144 fell off once, when the bed got too close to the edge of the road. What a mess! And the 72-80, when the bed came backwards down the hill, out of control. It went over on the cab side, too. In the old days, with a pusher and a pull truck, they used to climb some pretty steep hills .

  • I have the whole sequence of unloading this monster on video, but alas, it is WAY too long for youtube. I'll see what I can do about shortening it.

  • Jacks come down to lift the bed off the bunks, then the gooseneck flattens, and the bed lowers to the ground. The brakes burned up a few weeks after I took this, and caused the lowbed to crash. Dumping a 72-80 into the weeds. The 144 is a bit bigger than the 044, but not too much. It is obvious when they are parked side by side.

  • Man you got stories. Thats all I can say.

  • See what you can do. Im gonna have to scan my photo albums of when I worked up in Scar Creek-Bute Inlet and post them here. AWESOME SHOTS

  • You have to be RIGHT ON on your footing when you drop those jacklegs. One shitspot and that yarder's comin back off the bed one way or another. Lots of wood blocking and knowledge there I bet.

  • Brakes are everything. Most lowbeds I know have a hyd. retarder on the Alison auto, jacobs engine brake,a Pacbrake exhaust brake.then the service brakes.when you apply all combo, youve got good brakes. Especially with water. When i was in Scar Creek (Bute Inlet) the road crew had a 150T Knight beavertail bed with Hayes HD with a 18 speed fuller with a 4 speed auxilary. Now thats custom. You could do 2100 rpm on the 3408 Cat engine, and going 1/2km/hr, with a guarded EX400LC Hitachi on the back.
