This is from the funeral of Lt. Woodie Lackland McVay of Mobile, Alabama. A WWII navy fighter pilot, Lt. McVay was shot down over the island of Saipan in the Pacific in February 1944. He was declared MIA and later classified as dead. In reality, Lt. McVay was buried and dug up to be reburied elsewhere several times, and in the end, he was mistakenly placed in a grave for an unidentified soldier in the American Cemetery at Manila, the Philipines. An independent historian based out of Boston, Massachusetts tirelessly works to locate the bodies of WWII soldiers who were classified as MIA. His research group has found nearly 9,000 soldiers over the past 25 years, and Lt. McVay is one of them. After 65 years in a grave marked as unknown, Lt. McVay was returned to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama and reburied for the final time with his family.
