One of my favourite fighting games ever made also happens to be the very best launch title anyone could ask for. If you missed out on the original Soul Calibur, it's not to late to rectify the situation. Pick up an Agetec arcade stick, a Dreamcast, and a copy of Soul Calibur for next to nothing compared to what I paid back in 9/9/99.

The perfect launch title to what was a fantastic console. It doesn't get any better than Soul Calibur.

  • Wow this was an epic game indeed! I PLAYED it soo much with my friends back in the day haha. Amazing how well the game holds up compared to the other fighting series to this day! Good stuff my friend

  • @melficecoe I think virtually everyone who picked up a Dreamcast played this game for hours and hours. Excellent fighter that does hold up tremendously well today. It may have some balancing issues, but honestly it's worth it to replay it today. I've been having so much fun with my Dreamcast games ever since I took it out of my locker in the basement lol. I can't even play many new games, like all those Neo Geo Station games I have yet to review... O_O

  • I respect the whole series as a fighter. Even though I wasn't there from the start, Soul Calibur II and IV wowed me with their awesome movesets and amazing audiovisual production. Can't wait for SCV. But I really hope they tone down Maxi and Kilik. You show how broken and overpowered the character is here, but he's been like that through the whole series.

  • @AFMSB Indeed Ahmed.

  • Heh. Just rewatched this and I see that you're a user of Kilik's jumping staff pound. That has got to be the most broken move in the entire game.

When I introduced this to my cousins, one of them found it and got the timing just right and from then on if he hit you once, he would just beat you to death without hope of ever getting up. I set the CPU to maximum difficulty and he proceeded to beat the snot out of it, too, using that one move over and over like clockwork.

  • @netlorens My secret's out ;) Yeah that was one of the most unbalanced moves in the entire game. You had to perfect it just right, but once you did you could juggle the opponent until they were goners or forced them out of the ring.

If you watch my Remembering Soul Blade video, you'll notice that I didn't have direct-feed footage of the game. My Dazzle didn't arrive until just recently.

  • @netlorens I did mention Soul Edge in this review, and check out the video I did for Soul Edge in our PlayStation Classics playlists. That was a great game, but Soul Calibur took everything SB did and upped it by a factor of ten.

  • @netlorens It remains such a classic. It took what Soul Edge brought to the table and maxed everything out. Such a wicked game.

  • This is, without a doubt, one of the best multiplayer experiences available on the Dreamcast and, yes, it was an amazing launch title.

By the way, I apologise if you mentioned this and I missed it, but are you aware of Soul Edge for the arcade and Playstation? Technically Soul Calibur is actually Soul Edge 2.

  • I rented this back in '99 after buying my Dreamcast and my two brothers and I played it the entire weekend.

I loved all that there was to unlock, especially for a fighting game! Between the three of us, I'm sure we all beat the game with all the characters but Sophitia remains my weapon of choice, followed by Cerevantes. My middle brother is more of a Yoshimitsu and Maxi type.

I finally had the cash to buy this years later and introduced my cousins to it who just loved it.
