In December, the US suffered its worst environmental accident in over a decade. Billions of gallons of toxic sludge were strewn across East Tennessee after a coal ash dump ruptured.

Nearly three months later, as the cleanup continues, the federal government is no closer to passing regulation.

  • Even more reason to use renewable energy, clean coal is absolute bullshit.

  • I find it quite ironic especially when many Americans blame China and other developing countries for pollution when the US is just as bad.

  • @Unclesamslair Yeah...me either.

  • how come I never heard about this?

  • So do I. You did not know the full scale of this. We're talking about millions of acres of land that was covered in this hazardous waste. They've got it cleaned up pretty good now. Still, I think they are stupid for even building up such a stockpile.

  • Now they want to haul the coal ash from this spill to our landfill in Scott County. Making a big mess even BIGGER!!

  • I live about 7 miles away from this.I have been plagued with chronic fatigue and headaches so has my 15 yr old son.Our latest blow was my almost 2 year old was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. They told us the water was safe and we believed them.I just really want to know if this water is safe or not, because we bath in it ,drink it and all kinds of things.I want to know if the water we are drinking and bathing in is makeing us sick or the air?

  • "Clean coal" doesn't exist. No matter what people say or whatever marketing title they give it...it will never be clean.

It is time for a new energy policy. It is time to take coal off the table and work towards plausible, and realistic solutions that are readily available.

  • I have a route through there and it's bad. Wasn't as big as everyone makes out. The water saturation is the worse. Was good fishing there. Obama and Biden will love it!

  • That smell maybe all those noxious gases that are so full of.

So just because people may not necessarily support or be an active part of your causes renders them as idiots? You are right that too many Americans are not informed about the basics of civics and so called "common knowledge." But your contention that all Americans are is foolish hyperbole and makes you sound elitist.

Anyway, I too am against the wars. Will you be having any protest in the Los Angeles/Orange County areas?

  • Very true rjbonacolta,

These pigs will not regulate themselves!

  • Very true Drexxle,

In face, after the political and cultural up rise of the 1960's very good environmental legislation was passed. All coal power plants were required to have scrubbers by 2000. But when 2000 rolled around Pres. Bush and the republican congress had all of the laws changed and the scrubbers were scrubbed!

When people no long participate in the process big business runs the government for their profit and they do not care about social costs.
