One detail I love about Richardson-- he can read. In a later episode, after the newspapers are delivered, he opens one and starts reading (I don't think newspapers had many pictures back then, so I think he's actually reading).

I feel so sorry for Richardson, I always thought he would have had a great potential but he was the one Farnum always shunned because he was the only one seemingly (not really) but seemingly more low intelligent than Farnum himself who was shunned by others.

Richardson is almost my favourite character, he's probably the most honest and innocent person in the whole of Deadwood, despite working for E.B. He just takes everything without complaint and then spends his spare time 'Praying for his loved ones'.
