This was one of the first 45's I brought growing up in Detroit. I believe the song was credited to Nathaniel Meyer and the Midnighters or starlighters or something like that. I remember the Fortune label. As for it being Do Wops last gasp. hardly, there were some hits scattered, most memorably the Madlads "I Found a Love". Also there was one called "I do" that started out with "do do, do do , do do," So Do wop held on - maybe not as a major force but a force none the less - as late as 65, 66.

I was in the 8th grade in 1962 when this song was a hit. Still sounds good. Sorry to here that Nathanial past away in 2008. Nice to discover that the fabulous twilights were the back up group. Bad boys!

This had to be the last gasp of Doo-wop, hitting in 1962. Supposedly Berry Gordy bought out the Fortune label to pawn competition after Nathaniel's top-20 pop hit. Would love confirmation or denial.

No, that's not true. Fortune was never bought out - it fizzled-out after the owners got older, and less interested due to certain issues.
They made a short comeback in the 80s even, thanks to the Brown's daughter Janice, but she died shortly after from cancer, at a fairly young age.
I don't think Berry Gordy was worried about Fortune, he wasn't thinking of beating Detroit - he wanted to beat the world! and he did. But I love the Fortune sound.

Not that I ever heard of.
Back when this song came out, he played Dick Clark's American Bandstand, but that footage is not released (thanks DICK!)
