PARIS (Reuters) - The Dalai Lama accused Chinese troops of opening fire on protesters in eastern Tibet on August 18 and said in an interview published on Thursday he had unconfirmed reports that 140 people were killed.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told the French newspaper Le Monde that the army opened fire during a protest in the eastern Tibetan region of Kham on Monday.

Asked about a figure of 140 deaths mentioned in the incident reported in eastern Tibet, the Dalai Lama replied that the figure was an estimate that needed to be confirmed.
(AGI) - Beijing, 22 August - The first official reactions from China arrived following the interview by the Dalai Lama in the French daily 'Le Monde' about claims of shooting by Chinese police at a group of Tibetan demonstrators, and the later denials on the number of victims "In this area there has been no protest repressed with bloodshed" stated an anonymous government official from Garze, a city with a Tibetan majority in the south-west Chinese province of Sichuan. A similar denial came from a spokesperson from the police, again from Garze, who denied that there had been any such demonstration during the week. The Chinese Foreign ministry however keeps to its "no comment" stance. Pro-Tibet activists however maintain that it is impossible to get reliable information from Garze because telephone lines have been cut off and residents have been forbidden to talk to anyone. Garze and surrounding areas have been under strict military control since the time of protests in China in March in Lhasa and throughout Tibet, which were brutally repressed by security forces.

  • The Tibetan protest broke out in Tibet just this monday, and Chinese troops had opened fire on the crowd (hmm, wonder what the crowd was doing? burning down houses?). Nicholas Sarkozy boycotted the Games (No he didn't, he folded when China called him bluff). Also, there MAYBE 140 people killed, (Dalai Lama don't really know how many people are killed, who are killed---->that means maybe those brainless wonders were killing Han Chinese)

  • Do you ever feel tire of the sort of propaganda, ideological crusader?

  • It is just terrible, the killing of 140 protesters and the world media now want some special stunt to put such events on front page! Ethnic killings are covered up in high places . They all ignore each other crimes and murders and lies, cause they are in complicity of same crimes Thou Chinese government seems have special ruthless style of getting its way by constantly committing such crimes unpunished,no one is there to stop them!
