The Shelburne Museum located in Vermont, United States, is home to a huge collection of fine art, folk art and design. The museum showcases more than 150,000 artifacts and a world renowned quilt collection. The Shelburne Museum was founded by Electra Havemeyer Webb, who started as a decorator and took the quilt from the bed to the walls as a form of art.
In this video, Jean Burks, Sr. Curator at the Shelburne Museum, talks about the rich collection of quilts that are housed in this museum, some of which date back to more than three centuries. The museum houses quilts of all shapes, size and patterns. Some quilts are functional, while others were created for the sake of art. Jean also shares the details about the old and new art of quilt making techniques with the viewers. Among the various quilt patterns housed in the museum, some of the popular quilt patterns at Shelburne Museum include the Star of Bethlehem, the Mariner's Compass and the popular Pincushion patterns.
According to Jean, quilts appeal to our sense of timelessness and nostalgia. The color, pattern and scale of the quilt appeal to people at a personal level.
