This is a laserdisc player that was pulled from the Spaceship Earth ride at Disney world in Orlando FL. It was computer controlled to play video sequences for the ride. The ride has since been upgraded I'm assuming digital video stored on a server. After a few hours of tweaking & adjusting the potentiometers this 30 year old player (As of this writing, Unit was made in 1979) worked like new! These sony machines are definitely work horses it was in use at disney all day everyday for around 10 years, It even had the laser replaced once as someone left a note & date of the replacement, Laser tubes are typically good for 10,000 hours. I have two of these that run like new & plenty of replacement parts. Would be pretty cool to see in a museum one day.

These are pretty easy to service, The whole laser lens unit is held in with 4 big philips screws So taking out the whole unit is really easy. The motor, laser & lens all comes out as a whole. I removed the unit to clean the x,y, scan mirrors & the other optical componets.

  • have you got the disc it was origionaly used for?

  • No, I read somewhere that they were told to destroy the discs, Only a handful existed & if I remember correctly they were special made by "Image" or "Pioneer" I honestly don't remember. I read it a few years back & can't find it right now. They were destroyed because of copyright reasons, The site I read this on said there may be a handful that escaped destruction. It would be really neat to have one & see what all is on it. I believe I read the ride engineers may have got to keep the discs.

  • Similar technology was used in Star Trek the Experience in Vegas as well.

  • Dude, I was just looking at wire Recorders a second ago, and now I'm looking at "Old School" CD players.(okay it's not exactly a CD, but still. This is starting to get ridiculous.

  • You might wanna check out American Laser Games, They used laserdiscs for several games including lightgun game Mad Dog McCree. In which the machine basically just played timed video sequences. A local Mall I went to in Orange Park, FLorida. Had an M2 barrel roll simulator ride that used laserdiscs & the analog audio tracks controlled the ride, The digital sound was the sound used in the ride. Really fun simulator!

  • Image Entertainment was only a distributor; they never manufactured LaserDiscs. They have, more or less, hired just about every major replicator (Pioneer, 3M, Mitsubishi, Kuraray, Sony, Philips/DuPont, and Technidisc).

Companies known for making small batches for industrial/commercial applications may include Pioneer Video (both in Carson, CA. and Kofu, Japan) and 3M

More than likely, though, the discs may have been made by 3M.

  • Great now I have to look up wire recorders. LOL.

  • There were worse players from other manufacturers, such as Funai and Samsung.

Sony had a couple of models that were actually decent, though they had quite a few dogs and turkeys as well.

As for Sony discs, their rotters mainly came from DADC USA. Discs from DADC Japan and DADC Austria were excellent. Unfortunately, the majority of North American LDs made by Sony came from DADC USA.

  • dude you should donate that to the Computer Museum in CA.
