  • I remember Jonah running through the field, everybody stood up we sang God defend new Zealand.>>.Only time I have ever seen it in my country. The way Jonah played this day after many illnesses, even though we lost the game, A whole bar just got up and started singing the national anthem.. i remember it well. Thankyou Jonah

  • You don't know what you're talking about mate. About 1/4 of NZers are born overseas, it's not that weird since it's a country made up largely of immigrants. If someone grows up in NZ and considers themself to be a Kiwi, who are you to tell them otherwise?

But just fyi, there have been more Scottish born All Blacks than Fijian and there were more NZ born players in the Samoan 2003 WC squad than Samoan born players to EVER play for NZ.

  • Bunce was probably not even eligible to play for Samoa. Main ancestry is Niuean (part of NZ). Samoa poached him from NZ if anything. Rokocoko and Sivivatu are borderline perhaps, but both came to NZ as high schoolers.

Tuigamala came to NZ as a kid.

If you're from England, how about Victor Ubogu, Kyran Bracken, Dylan Hartley, Mike Catt, Matt Stevens, Mark Van Gisbergen, Perry Freshwater, Riki Flutey?

  • Bunce played for Western Samoa in the 91 WC, before he played for NZ, because he was and is Samoan. Can't get any more blatant poaching than that. Tuigamala, Sivivatu and Rokocoko were all born in their home countries - Rokocoko went home to Fiji to marry a Fijian girl in 2008. Thes guys - and more besides - are not New Zealanders, and it's against the spirit of the game (not to mention the development in the Islands) for you to poach them.

  • Frank Bunce was born in Auckland. Tuigamala came to NZ as a child. Sivivatu and Rokocoko came as high schoolers. Sivivatu and Rokocoko are as close to poaching as you can get.

  • But Rokocock and Sivivatu weren't, nor were Bunce, Tuigamala and others from the past. And the fact that the Pacific Island team was created, specifically because it doesn't play "official" tests so its players can be poached by New Zealand, shows you their intentions.

Btw anyone got the videos of Lomu's tries v England in 2002? There are loads from the 95 and 99 RWC games but I can't find the '02 ones anywhere. They were his last tries for NZ.

  • NZ doesn't really poach. Jonah was born in NZ for crying out loud, as was Tana Umaga. Muliaina, So'oialo and Collins all came to NZ at very early ages

  • Yeah, the whole reason why the Pacific Islands team was created is because the IRB ruled that players couldn't represent two different nations. So now New Zealand vets players in the PI team before it poaches them for the All Blacks. If you took out the Fijian, Samoan and Tongan players from the All Blacks, they wouldn't be half as good (not that they're that good anyway - France always beat them and they choke when it matters!)

  • you know what sucks about this game. Rupeni caucau and vula maimuri were playing for the nz barbarians the previous day. they did it so they couldn't play here for Fiji. also vunibaka, tanivula and Tuilevu were in the country yet they also were not allowed to play here for Fiji. this is like the all blacks vs Fiji A.

  • he has some decent strength.
