Trying to do something as a learning activity; made the Super Mario stuff by starting with a couple midis, and the intro from Rocky Horror, and made a video-game-esque melded intro thingy that looks kinda like an old-school video game splash screen... Oh, just watch it, it'll be over quick.

2012-02 notes
Okay, for the record: the '8-Bit' in the title is largely because I'm a fan of 8-Bit Theater, and liked the sound of it better. It's been a while since I worried about the specs, but there was something like a 16 color palette available on the hardware, yes? The animation uses about 13 colors, and swapping the palette colors would allow for the fade in. 8-bit, no?

When I created the music - after doing the visuals - I didn't have access to/wasn't aware of software to make the audio straight-up 8-bit. So I used the lowest tech stuff I had available to me - MIDI. Sort of a cheat, maybe; but I remember hearing MIDI on my ol' 386 back in the days when I was also playing NES, so I figured what the hell.

  • this doesnt sound 8-bit at all... more like piano

  • @megawillmonds were you around back in the day of MIDI? that was supposed to be the basic MIDI piano... i'll give you that the look is more 16-bit.

  • this is not 8-bit, more like 16-bit... but good effort

  • @PreyingMantisMan the '8-bit' moniker was largely a nod to 8-bit theater. in fairness, though, there are maybe 16 colors in the whole thing (minus youtube compression stuff). i remember seeing more colors on my old 386. (and while on the topic, check out the original system shock - and keep in mind it was around about the time of doom, and before quake.)

  • it's loks excellent, but it doesn't sound right :)

  • @nrdesign1991 well, yeah; it was a self-wrought merge between the fox theme and a recognizable mario sound.

  • I agree with what has been said before, the sound is definitely closer to 16-bit than 8-bit. 8-bit music tends to be presented with much more simple drums(more like white noise), a triangle wave for the bass, and two pulse waves. Good effort though :)

  • @miskellkyle no it doesnt, there are no limitations in this at all..

  • IT SOUNDS 16-BIT!

  • I suppose you are just trolling, but I wont be the last user to tell you that those sounds could not be made on any eight bit machine that ever existed.

  • this is just a general midi kit, doesn't sound 8-bit at all.

  • Was is hard to do the gif?

  • @606Zodiac it's not. it's basically a really complicated animated gif file i made after having an idea. there's more to it, but i got distracted.
