UK men guilty of transatlantic bomb plot

Three British-born Muslims have been found guilty of plotting to bring down seven transatlantic airliners with homemade liquid bombs smuggled onto the aircraft in soft drink bottles.

Ringleader Abdulla Ahmed Ali was found guilty of conspiring to murder thousands in the plot, whose discovery in 2006 triggered wide-ranging new rules on carrying liquids on commercial aircraft.

Tanvir Hussain, 28, and Assad Sarwar, 29, were found guilty on the same charges of plotting to carry out bombings on aircraft flying from London's Heathrow airport to the United States and Canada.

Police said the terrorist attack would have caused a massive loss of life if it had succeeded.

The discovery of the plot and the method of bomb making led to the biggest crackdown in airport security around the globe.

It was a highly sophisticated plan targeting the West on both sides of the Atlantic.

In August 2006, at the height of Britain's summer holidays, police and intelligence services arrested a number of British Muslims over an extraordinary bomb plot.

Paul Stephenson, the deputy commissioner of the London police force at the time, said they had intended mass murder on an unimaginable scale.

The plan was to use the UK as a launch pad for a wave of transatlantic attacks. Seven flights flying to North America were to be blown up in one afternoon.

To bypass airport security, the plotters replaced the liquid in soft drink bottles with hydrogen peroxide to make improvised explosives.

MI5 officers uncovered the plotters as they followed cells of extremists in London.

Andy Hayman led Scotland Yard's counter terrorism operations from 2005 to 2007.

"I will remember distinctly the day when my colleague came into my office and what was seen to be a routine meeting he shared with me the fact that we suspected they were going to bring aircraft down across either the Atlantic or across the UK or American cities," he said.

"I remember taking a deep breath in and saying, 'for goodness sake, are you absolutely sure that is what we suspect?'"

A flat in East London was turned into a bomb factory. MI5 broke in one night and installed a camera and filmed the bomb makers.

As they were listening in, they heard the bombers record chilling martyrdom videos. Ahmed Ali, the ringleader, invoked the name of Osama bin Laden.

"Osama warn you many times to leave our land or you will be destroyed and now the time has come for you to be destroyed," he was heard to say.

After a six-month trial the jury has found three men, including the ringleader and the chief bomb maker, guilty of conspiring to activate bombs disguised as drinks on transatlantic flights.

Anthony Glees, a professor of security and intelligence studies at Buckingham University, says the verdict is a tremendous breakthrough for British intelligence and British police.

"If these people had been successful the damage they would have done would have been three or four times the amount of damage that was down on 9/11," he said.

"It shows that the people who get involved with these are not sort of down and out and not people who are underprivileged.

"These are people who've been taken on by some of our good universities, given good degrees, teaching and training, yet hate this country and hate the people in it and want to destroy this country."

The plot led to big changes in airport security measures around the world.

All liquids are now banned from hand luggage and travellers are subjected to tight security checks before boarding flights.

Scary. They wanted to blow up all those planes going from London Heathrow to NYC & Canada. This is why there's a restriction of the amount of liquids which can be taken on-board flights, everything has to be packed into very tiny accepted bottle sizes for anything liquid, including lotions & cosmetics.
