Albert Zugsmith's bizarre 1962 adaptation of Thomas DeQuincey's masterpiece. It's a surreal adventure yarn set in China Town, starring Vincent Price as DeQuincey. It's a very fun movie, not available on VHS or DVD, to my knowledge. Enjoy.
Thanks to Jonathan Rosenbaum for bringing another great movie to my attention.
You'll notice the title screen shows "Souls of Sale" -- this is an alternate title. This is really Confessions of an Opium Eater.

  • Check oldies.com for souls for sale. Have thousands of out of print movies at bargain prices

  • @indiandaeng Oh do they have Souls for Sale? I never noticed. Thanks for sharing,. I love oldies.com! My favourite DVD shop.

  • Thank you greatly for uploading this, but I do wish it were better quality :'o( I even more wish it were available on dvd or even vhs. :'o( Argh!

  • @kivenevik No problem. I thought it had a limited VHS release at some point under the title Souls for Sale. And I'm pretty sure the file I uploaded is a VHS-rip. Otherwise, it's one of those movies you only find on Turner Classic Movies and, curiously enough, Amazon's Video on Demand. Cheers!

  • @Roubiere hmm, i don't suppose you could inform me of what video on demand is? I've had a quick search and I can't quite figure it out...

  • @kivenevik If you're in the USA, you can pay to stream a movie online. I've never done it before, so I have no idea how it works. I'm in Canada, so I couldn't even if I wanted.

  • ...ah should have read the description, my apologies...its a shame it isnt easier to find

  • by the way where in gods name did you find a copy of this?have been searching for weeks

  • there is nothing better than watching this on the nod.. the dialogue from the movie seeps in while you're half out of it and makes for some fantastic dream sequences. god bless the chinese for learning how to vaporize opium, and god bless vincent price for kicking so much ass.

  • @indiandaeng: I've got HOUSE OF 1,000 DOLLS on VHS. I'm aware of the X-rated version but have never seen it. According to Vincent's daughter the movie's producers were shooting an X-rated version with a different cast at the same time Price was starring in the non-X version. This is the first time I'd seen this particular film but being a fan of Vincent's I've heard about it for years.

  • If you liked this, you really should see the Vincent price: House of 1000 Dolls. There is an X rated and a M rated. The X is great. Vincent is a magician who kidnaps girls for a brothel. The men go there and have a time with the girls and get a mini doll of the girl and this is used as a pass for entrance.

  • Movies Unlimited offers a DVD of it for sale at $29.99 and the movie code is: D0-0843

  • @Roubiere They did about 1 year ago. If you download mirro (torrents) the full film is available for free, have to download 9 parts then put on disc in order. Hope it helps you.

  • Great film! Thanks for posting this! A little trivia: Hoagy Charmicle wrote/recorded a great song about the opium dens, titled Hong Kong Blues. An excellent instrumental version was done by exotica legend Martin Denny. I am currently sel ling/trading the LP record "Confessions of an English Opium Eater", Dequincey's classic book, read by actor Anthony Quayle.
