A new year of beer, a new year of food. Our project on the seasonal nature of beer, with a little food thrown in for good measure. This week: man can't live by bread alone. That's how garlic bread was invented. Also featuring Port Brewing Hop 15

  • I'd heard that Port seem to be experiencing some problems at the moment - it seems hard to believe, as they are clearly a team of people who know how to make great beer, but there certainly are a lot of unhappy (and quite a few happy, it should be said) customers talking about this on Beer Advocate.

  • Avery, APRK is calling your name. There's a free t-shirt in it for you when they're screened. Maybe some beer glasses too, LOL!

  • Hmm, I think I'm going to have to be the Switzerland of the war between CAMRA and the APRK - I'll subscribe to CAMRA, wear APRK T-shirts, and call the police if anyone flushes the toilet after 10pm.

  • This is a super beer. I had it a few weeks ago with a huge bowl of homemeade hummus and pitta crisps - it is great with oil and garlic and bread!

    Is that a wine t-shirt, btw?! :)

  • Yeah, it's good, but a bit of a beast. I tend to drink hoppy beers quite quickly, but at 10.5%abv, that can get a bit messy.

And yes, it's a wine t-shirt, but don't worry, it's not a sponsored product placement! (although I wouldn't rule out the idea if any brewers want to send me their t-shirts)

  • ZakAvery,

No no, drinking that kind of beer out of a wine glass is the best way, like you said, to get the full aroma and full flavor of a great beer. The flavors just release from that type of glass. This is the first video review of yours I have come across. Nice work, you're review is spontaneous in nature. My wife and would love to share a pint with you the next time we make it across the big pond. Cheers!

  • Port has some quality control issues right now. Their lastest brandy barrel aged beer ($30) had no carb on release and I just got an IPA from them that was infected with brett. Their beers are good when on, but I can't afford to gamble with the prices they charge.

  • I'll try this garlic bread idea with a nice hoppy dogfish head or something, thanks for the info on that one man.

  • Hmm, that's a bit of a dilemma. At the moment, have a lot of good beers, but at some point, I guess I should try something a bit less exalted.

  • I notice you only review GOOD beers. I'd love to see you drink Bud Light or Pabst Blue Ribbon (if you get those beers in the UK?)

  • Cheers, Chad. The glass is a habit I've got into, but I likethat it traps a lot of aroma and you can swirl the beer easily to release more. It seems to irritate a lot of people, who think that I'm some sort of wine geek coming to spoil their fun. I also think that if you use the same glass consistnently (be it nonic, tumbler or jamjar), you can compare beers accurately.

Alan Moore?! Good lord! I'm not sure what he looks like without his hair and berad, so I'll have to take your word for it.
