House votes to end social promotion

A bill that would end social promotion in New Mexico's publics schools has passed with overwhelming support in the state House of Representatives. The vote was 62 to 5, indicating broad bipartisan support for the legislation.
The bill would stop third graders from moving on to fourth grade if they can't read proficiently at grade level. The legislation would also eliminate the current practice that allows parents to over-rule principals and teachers who want to hold a student back.
The bill is a priority for Governor Martinez, who predicts it will pass in the state Senate.
" I really believe it will because I really believe the Senate has our kids first and foremost - their interests," said Martinez. "We're making sure that they're learning, that we reduce the dropout rate and we'll make sure we have a goiod solid education so our kids have good jobs when they get out."
