Mass spectrometry animation of SRM :
- ions of 3 different masses (i.e. colors) start in the first quadrupole ;
- one ion of a selected mass (i.e. blue color) is filtered in Q1 ;
- then fragmented in q2 into 3 different fragments (with different masses, i.e. shapes) ;
- one of these fragments is filtered in Q3.
- this selected fragment hits the detector after Q3 and produces a signal (i.e. flash).
Please check http://www.cruxgraphix.ch/ms for details.
Yes : in this case Q1 is a quadrupole "filtering" one mass, q2 is a second one used for the fragmentation, and Q3 is a third one also filtering. (Note : in the nomenclature, a big "Q" should be used for a quadrupole with a mass-filtering capability, and a small "q" should be used for a quadrupole "transmitting" the ions - in that case along fragmentation.)
