...So the stars of this game commit suicide to summon ghosts?

@DeadlyAngelicDemon I think there is some kind of symbolism behind it. The ghosts, called Personas, are explained by one character as "a facet of your personality that surfaces as you react to external stimuli". That being said, those guns are not actually guns, but maybe the act creat enough stimuli so the others sides of the character's personality may take form. Then again, I may be reading too much into the game and it is just starts committing suicide to summon personas.
