After I realized that there may be some difficulty finding a good toroid in countries around the world, I decided to see if I could use the tiny toroid found in the base of a broken or used CFL.
It was very easy to do.
The tuning is already done so to speak, and I was even able to use one of the original mag wires!
This toroid easily gave me around 55 spiky volts, which will light 7 leds brightly and safely.
I used a 2N2222 with a 470 ohm resistor at the base. (I also used a 102 cap in parallel with that resistor but it is NOT necessary.)
Finally, I made a total of 6 strings of 7 leds, and I connected the strings at the beginning and end being careful to observe polarity.
And, of course it runs for a long time on a single AA battery.
My purpose here is to encourage and to show that it is easy and almost free to have a bright light in your home - any home.

  • @Addepat I made a series of vids using a joule thief with secondary. They have the diagrams.

    Basically this is a plain joule thief circuit with 2 exceptions.

    1- the led is NOT across the transistor, and

    2- there is a third winding around the toroid that does nothing more than use the pulsing that is magnetically in the toroid because of the switching action of the joule thief.

    This third winding has the leds attached.

    I later called it a joule thief as pulsed circuit. Better name.

  • Nice Idea that just works. I just think if you submerged the Leds in oil you would get a better effect because it distributes the light better. Even water works but you have to shield the wires on the led to prevent corrosion.

  • Well, a plastic bag is not as messy, unless it had garbage in it before you wrapped it!

    Exactly...It just works and most people can do it.

    Yes, that is a much better shot of your light at the end, or at least longer. Excellent job here! Now everyone can make these lights with little or no cost to them. This is such a wonderful thing.

    I understand you are wealthy today having just found 2 burned out cfls. ?

    Now, you can make 2 "jeanna's lights" because you DO have the big toroids, and you will have all these great parts for led "world lights" too. A very wealthy man.

    I am thinking the high voltage caps will be very useful in many places too.
