Dr. Eugenie Scott, Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, distinguishes between empirically based knowledge and "revealed knowledge," or knowledge gathered from a higher power. She uses the Bhaktivedanta Institute's disbelief in the 1969 moon landing as an example of revealed knowledge.

This program was recorded in collaboration with the 2010 SkeptiCal Conference, in Berkeley, CA, on April 24, 2010.

How are science and skepticism related? Is skepticism a part of science, or is science a tool of skepticism? Dr. Eugenie C. Scott, Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, discusses these questions, and explores the importance of teaching both science and skepticism. - SkeptiCal

Eugenie Scott, a former university professor, is the Executive Director of NCSE. She has been both a researcher and an activist in the creationism/evolution controversy for over twenty-five years, and can address many components of this controversy, including educational, legal, scientific, religious, and social issues.

She has received national recognition for her NCSE activities, including awards from scientific societies, educational societies, skeptics groups, and humanist groups. • Well just today in sunny florida i stepped outside my door on a clear cloudless day. I looked to the right i saw the sun, i looked to the left i could see the moon. So obviously the sun is not between the earth and moon

  • Why don't we just show the people at the Bhaktivedanta Institute a solar eclipse? I suppose they would spend the rest of their lives concocting an explanation with Vedic ingredients. This woman should make a presentation on the thought processes that go into such rationalization.

  • @Ranillon I'm a Born Again Christian, but even that doesn't stop me from realizing the obvious. The Moon is clearly closer than the sun, to me it's obvious during a full moon. And in my first comment I meant *proven, not proved... *facepalm*

  • @maddieissobeastlike It is. These people are being intentionally ignorant even though indisputable proof is easily found. It's sad -- if religion makes you disbelieve manifestly true things like that the Moon is far closer to the Earth than the Sun or that man has visited the Moon then that religion (at least that one part) is being a negative, corrupting influence that can only do harm.

  • I thought it was proved that the moon was the closest celestial body to the Earth?

  • ^^

I have no idea what these guys are talking about

  • @domzbu Sorry - simple logic has nothing to do with conspiracy theorists. The same with people who believe WTC #7 was a "controlled demolition" - knocking down two 110-story buldings wasn't enough?

  • It's simple: Why hoax the landing 7 times. Isn't once enough? hide it 7 times? That's the simplest argument to rebuke any hoax theory.

  • @Tweekerhead ; Yes you are quite right. Gamma Ray images of the sun are very dim due to that reason. I just get fed up with these people who think all forms of radiation must be deadly. We are being bombarded each second by particles.

Who is this woman on here? I have never heard so much crap in one lecture! Note you never see the audiance, is she talking to herself?
