I live just outside JFK, and you should see how many aircraft they handle in a single minute. Also, if you haven't noticed, JFK and La Guardia both have runways facing heading 040 and 130, so you can't have aircraft approaching runways on top of each other.Especially with New York's air traffic. We have the busiest skies and the most delays of any airport in the country, which puts even more strain on the controllers.

@Matthington on this approach it is quite common as it is quite a challenging approach. In fact some people and pilots compare it to kai tak's checkerboard approach due to the large turn required just before touchdown.
