  • I agree whole heartedly, defense has never been about fighting. If you leave yourself vulnerable such as with hair that can be grabbed, a neck tie etc, are you not at a disadvantage? Maybe I don;t know anything, Ive only trained since 1964, alot of it in the Orient.

  • @donoberloh Oh, I know, I'll stay in my house and behind the couch!

The Samurai had to cut their hair when their class was outlawed. Native Americans had to cut their hair when kidnapped into residential schools. All teh Nazis were skin heads. The mongols never had to cut their war hair...

'64 eh? Beats me out. But hey, aren't you at a disadvantage for getting old? You should have put an end to that.

  • Here's a shot in the dark but I'll just throw it out anyway...

Doesn't that 4-foot long ponytail hanging from the back of his head make it incredibly easy for almost anyone to grab and take his head down to the ground???

It would seem that if his goal were practical self-defense that his hairstyle would immediately betray him at the beginning of any confrontation.

Maybe his first self-defense weapon of choice should be a pair of scissors.

  • @Neil6000 I don't fight for a living anymore...I just hang the way I want an teach others. I've never taught anyone to grow their hair. I'm 64 with 35 yrs in, doin ok except for a bit of knee problems but hey - no one's grabbed it yet cause I DON"T FIGHT NO MORE!

    Sheesh... :)

  • I trust Ted Truscott

  • @Justnin Thanks, whoever you are... :)

  • Why does this guy still have a cane, if he can jump around like that? Hell, when I started to use a cane at 26 it was 'cause I couldn't stand up without it. And as soon as I felt I could move around 1/100th as well as this guy, I'd snap the thing in half. Until my condition worsened and I'd wind up buying another. I still prevailed in fights with several younger assholes, because of painkiller induced invincibility, and not drinking - people get into fights in the first place due to drinking.

  • just amazing!!! i wish he was my grandpa lol

  • This looked good for a nice work out but, I was wondering if you would be willing to show us a simple cane drill we could go through along with this. I have no interest in picking a fight but it would be nice to be a little proficient with my weapon of choice in case I had to fight.

  • Not so that you can fight at a prearranged time, in a prearanged manner. As for the gentleman in the video. Thank you good sir for shareing your knowledge. I am currently learning cane fighting, and I will be incorperateing your warm up into my own excercises.

  • Perhaps it is just me. But it seems many of the comentors share one fundamental misconception. You change yourself for competition in martial arts. Martial arts today being a sport, with rules that must be followed. And in competition you are dealing with indaviduals of similar skill levels who CAN move fast enough to grab your hair. In self defense simply thier are no rules, no regulations and no holds barred. Self defense is learned on the off chance you should be unable to AVOID a fight.

  • Respect!

  • @Neil6000

I know people with hair like that who could snap your neck before you even saw that ponytail!

If you are good at self defence you attire and hairstyle don't matter, If you change your hairstyle, clothing and gear (eg. carry weapons exclusively for fighting as opposed to a walking stick for walking andalso POSSIBLY for defence) to your advantage in combat, you are probably a professional warrior (army, bodyguard...) or just paranoid... imho...

  • Well of course as we get old we have limitations,(aaak) but them my best instructors were in thier eighties and nineties and still teaching and givng lesson on humilty.

Once we stop is when we get old.

Personally we use adapted Bokken or hanbo and teach kenjutsu and Kuroda-Ha Jojutsu techniques, As these schools use their weapons mainly against swords, we tend to think anything it not as intense.
