@0481870 here hi didn't had the firebird pickup yet, see the fillmore east pictures, there you can see that it's a Dynasonic pickup.
But anything else you say is very very true! got to love neil for letting his heart play his guitar.
I've recently also bought a firebird pickup to get a bit closer to his sound, but impossible to get there exactly...

Neil's sound? Get a 1959 Fender Tweed Amp and a 1953 Les Paul 'Gold Top' painted black with a spray bomb, install a 'Firebird pick-up' and have Larry Craigg, Neil's guitar tech work his magic on it and get a heart transplant because even with the identical equipment that Neil has, Neil plays from a place where no other guitarist has ever gone! Neil has an intimate relationship with electricity. Neil drives his 'Old Black' like Dale Earnhardt drove the Black #3!
