KANE: 7 years old, neutered male, yellow Lab, 70 lbs.

Kane was rescued by a kind and ethical veterinarian when his owner brought him to her to be euthanized. The owner was going through a divorce and because Kane is nearly completely blind and deaf (and has been since he was very young), his owner had decided that it would be "inhumane" to put him up for adoption. Fortunately, this wonderful vet felt otherwise, and called Lab Rescue, because Kane is a healthy, affectionate and cheerful companion. While a guest at the Veterinary Clinic, Kane went on daily 3-4 mile walks with no ill effects, and quickly learned to find his way around the home of the Tech who couldn't resist taking him into her home to foster until Rescue came to pick him up. Here is what his Foster says about him: Kane is doing great! He had a blast running around the Berkeley Marina, and the uneven ground didn't bother him a bit. Our black Lab, Sante, kept tabs on him, but he was busy just having fun. At home, he sleeps through the night on his bed in the family room, and has found his way by himself down the stairs to the backyard when he needs to go. He has a very gentle mouth, loves his walks and playing tug-o-war (sometimes barking and yowling with excitement), but settles down nicely after walks and play. Kane is great with children (the vet has 3), other dogs, AND their cat. He bonds easily to anyone who is kind to him, and adapts remarkably quickly to his surroundings.

Rescue would like to see him in a home where someone is around most of the time, as he has had enough of being alone, and understandably feels more secure when he is with his people. It would be an added bonus if he had a dog buddy to show him the ropes. Kane would make a great companion for a fit retired couple or individual, who enjoy walks and play with a four-legged friend. He's perfectly safe off-leash, as he likes to keep tabs on you to as a sort of compass. He's just an easy, loving guy, and a joy to have around. Plus, he loves nothing more than visits from the grandkids, unless it's a snuggle on the sofa. Kane is up to date on all his vaccinations, will be microchipped, and even comes with a supply of Frontline and Heartgard, that was a parting gift from his veterinarian-angel. Kane is being fostered in Berkeley and is looking for a special home willing to take on the adventure of being the guardian of a blind/deaf dog.
