Something Wrong, all this time, I was spinning the engine backwards.

As pointed out by Jonerik78, what's wrong is that I was spinning the prop the wrong way. Yes, I am totally embarrassed. I was tempted to say that I did this on purpose to see if anyone would catch it, but that wouldn't be in the interest of good science.

Maybe it's a lesson to not try to work in such adverse conditions.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, indeed, something wrong. All happy and pleased with our success with 10%, tree hugging, Olive oil, two stroke lubricant, we decided to test our gold standard. This was a run with only 10%, Klotz Benol, castor oil, two stroke lubricant. The bottle says it's for gasoline and methanol fuelled engines. They include the snowmachine and dirt bike dudes along with those of use running these itty, bitty little toy airplane engines.

OK, Klotz, if you're so smart, how do you explain THIS.

On 20% Klotz and 80% kerosene, this little Norvel, dieselized .15 is quite happy. Even with no Cetane Booster it WILL run albeit it a little gnarly with some high compression required. The CB allows for lower compression and the run gets as smooth as that fake silk,,, rayon, nylon, whatever.

But, at 10% and even WITH a little Cetane Booster, we have something go real bad. This was a surprise and no matter what we did, we had trouble. Even hot from multiple prime runs, we STILL needed prime to get fire. On the OliveLUBE mix, even at 10% we always got a hot start without the need for prime.

Occasionally, the 10% Klotz mix would fire off and give us a short run. Sometimes it would just quit. Sometimes it would sag from 9.5K to 6K and stay there for a few minutes and then quit. I really WAS waiting for something to blow UP. It never did but maybe there was something half broke inside that was doing this. So, I fired up on the 10% OliveLUBE and got a nice, normal run. Nope, no WMDs here, so I went and did a Klotz attempt again. Uh uh,,, no sir, no go. So I went back to OliveLUBE. Just fine.

This was repeated three times for both mixes for a total of six. All the same result.

The Klotz mix needed a full turn richer on the needle but the compression was about the same for both. Both needed slightly higher compression for a start.

Could it be that OLIVE OIL is a superior lubricant, in SOME cases compared to Castor oil?

One afternoon on one engine doesn't prove anything except that we have some tantalizing possibilities for further experimentation.

Addendum:

Very important to note is that the runs on OliveLUBE were not just the short clips shown here. This series took a full afternoon, some five hours in all. Many times, the two ounce tank was only 1/3rd down when a test or clip was taken. On all of the mixes except, of course, the castor, I let the engine run out the tank. How long? don't know but many times I let it sing while I posted a clip to this amazing website and waited till the download was complete. Twice I made a hot chocolate to ward off the chill and while looking out the window, I was satisfied that my new muffler system WAS muffling the sound as observed from inside the house. My neighbours were likely pleased too.

Addendum:

Got a little ahead of myself condemning castor for these poor runs. Well, it was cold and we know that at cold temps, the castor settles out of kerosene. This happens when you don't have any ether in the mix. A good castor like Klotz Benol has the capacity of staying blended without ether but only at reasonable temperatures. Reasonable as in above 40 or 50F. What fooled me was the apparent good mix indicated by the healthy pink glow of fuel in the tank. Looked good, maybe wasn't. This one is going to be repeated in warmer weather. Not likely soon though, winter is here.

  • could you pm me the insides of the diesel head i want to rebuit the engine in my boat to diesel

  • @robot797 you need a lathe to make the parts. Also, you can get a diesel head from Davis Diesel Development for almost any engine made. They're not cheap but are extremely well made and work perfectly. But you need to be careful. Diesels load the parts, especially the crank more than with glow combustion. Some conversions, like Cox will break the crank but Davis provides a heavy duty unit in that case.

  • first of all take that stupid peace of crap tubing off the eguast that stops air flow second its boging down that mean you need to take the carb off and take off the bowl and get some carb cleaner specificly b12 chemitool and spray it out then blow it out with air hose and try that its happend to me with my motorcycle and my nitro rc do tht and see what happens

  • Note that the tube is the same diameter as the muffler itself so it's really a very long muffler with enormous volume and as such, it has even LESS exhaust restriction than the standard muffler.

These very simple carbs actually don't HAVE a bowl.

Read the sidebar. You'll see that I've admitted that I was spinning the engine BACKWARDS. As the engine is crank ported, and not reed ported, it won't run backwards. It's burning off the prime but isn't drawing fuel.

  • To lean meaning not getting enough fuel... adjust the needle on the carb counter clock wise. start with 8th turns until it starts to run better then fine adjust it by pinching the fuel like at high throttle... if it stalls out then its still running lean if it revs up then its rich... Hope this helps...

  • Well, it wasn't getting ANY fuel, a function of trying to start it in reverse. :o(

But your starting tips are exactly right. The pinch test is useful for the top end as well as adjusting the idle. I used to do that a lot but these days, I just go by the sound of the engine.

After doing some 90 of these videos and more than 50 that never got posted, you kind of get an instinct. But, as in here, you're instincts sometines stink and one little oversight can lead you down a rabbit hole.

  • what the hell is that?

  • look at your fuel bottle looks like you need to tilt it and check that exhaust look like your chocking it with that hose

  • and this engine is for? one of those big RC planes?

  • @hopeso

    is this head home made?

or an other question do you sell engines?

  • @periloveskyle firstly your retarted as when the exhaust heats up the gasses cooling at the end of the pipe suck more gasses from the engine giving more power so shut up u stupid piece of crap

  • Some people need to lay off the coolaid with their comments. Actually everybody needs to cool it with thier comments on ALL the YOUtube videos. Its rude. I wont put up with it. Someone needs to kick them in the ass.

  • How come this is quieter than the other video with the plastic bucket? could you explain?

  • @hopeso

at my work the are willing to make a head for me

so if i get the plans and it is not to much work i get a good/working one
