______________

ROSAL, CONCHING (Conchita Rosal) b. San Jose, Batangas 1926 d. Quezon City 6 Dec 1985. Singer. She was born to Eusebio and Soledad Rosal, and married lawyer-impresario Luis Pimentel. She started singing at the age of six as a church soloist in the San Jose Church in Batangas. She also loved to sing while her mother sold fish at the market, delighting listeners with her Filipino songs, notably "Ang Maya". Later she studied voice at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music where she became a favorite student of noted professor Lourdes Corrales de Razon and a classmate of Sylvia La Torre. Rosal further honored her craft on her own by studying other singers. In the late 1960's she took advance studies in the US under Dean Verchines, coach to leading artists of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera.

Rosal's first performance on the stage was in Dalagang Bukid, 1950, at the far Eastern University Auditorium. She began her rise to prominence when she won the Elizalde Family Hour talent search in 1952. Sle learned acting skills while playing Sally in in Herbert and Trudl Zipper's production of Die Fledermaus. She was singing in the Manila Symphony Society Chorus when the Zippers cast her as Carmen in the Tagalog version of Bizet's opera. First presented in 1956 at the FEU Auditorium, the Tagalog Carmen, set in 19th-century Binondo, was a huge success and brought Rosal her first taste of fame in the opera world. Later on, her memorable performance in the Philippine production of Madame Butterfly, 1967, and Aida, 1971, established her as one of the country's top opera singers. She also starred in La Gionda and sang the lead role in the sarswela Ang Kiri.

Rosal's spinto voice enabled her to sing both dramatic and lyrics roles and to execute an operatic repertoir ranging from very light sarswela to Carmen for mezzo-soprano. She was also famous for her beautiful rendition of kundiman of which she made several recordings. Together with Sylvia La Torre, she popularized the light classics in mini-concerts at the Philamlife Auditorium. She was well-known over the airlanes and later on television.

During a musical career spanning more than three decades, Rosal was hailed as one of the Philippines' great sopranos. Her last operatic performance was in Aida in 1981. She made her last public appearances in the country in a concert with Sylvia La Torre in 1982. Then she went on a concert tour of the United States in 1983 to raise funds for the Dipolog Church. At this time she was already battling cancer, which led to her death in 1985. Just before she died, she was engaged in a project to record various renditions of "Ave Maria" of which she was able to record only five.

  • @diapason007

I'd be happy to translate it for you, however at this point I'm not entirely sure you if you'd have already gotten yourself a translation.

  • I have loved this song since buying a tape of Conching Rozal in Manila many years ago.

I would really appreciate a translation of the lyrics into English if possible.

  • The vinyl LP records you are playing appears to be good as new, wala halos gasgas. I am enjoying all of them.

  • Are you the owner of Villar Records? How come you have all these old records???
