"hardly caused ripple" may have been underplaying, but it would have ended JFK's career. There may be like Santorum fucknuts who believe separation is a myth, but I would hardly call that mainstream. Look at polls over the years too, in 1959 74% of people said they would NEVER vote for an Atheist president, today that percentage rests in the 40s. 50 years ago reports like "The Homosexuals" were considered was unbiased network news.
