The official trailer for Downton Abbey Series 3. Joining the cast this season is Shirley MacLaine as Martha Levinson the American mother of Cora Crowley. The season will occur during the Roaring 20s and new characters in the Kitchen and Staff quarters.

I was correct, actually. In the absence of a male heir, Mary could succeed to the title. That's what Matthew was saying in Series 1. "If the estate is in danger" - which with his death, it would be, she'd be able to succeed to both. She could become "Countess of Grantham" in her own right, and her husband would be "suo jure" (in right of his wife)

Not quite right. If Lord Grantham dies sometime after 1925, Mary would've been able to inherit Downton her parents' assets, as well as Matthews, but she still won't be able to inherit the Earldom, as it remains for "heirs male" only. If Matthew dies before LG and there's no new male heir, the Earldom would've become extinct (revert back to the Crown) after LG dies.

TOTALLY agree! People don't understand that while meanness can't be totally excused, Thomas has to hide who he really is. Be still my heart -- does the clip at 0:35 mean that we'll finally have a Thomas love interest? I'm a straight woman but much like a lot of straight guys like lesbian scenes, I have a bit of a thing for wanting to see Thomas and another guy get romantic. :) We shall see! I'm in the US and trying to avoid any details about season 3 until January!

As it happens, if he killed off Matthew it COULD continue; in 1925 an act was passed allowing women to succeed to the title in the absence of a male, so Mary would become COUNTESS OF GRANTHAM without Matthew in 1925 anyway.
