NOCCA Creative Writing and Warren Easton senior Sarah Allen recently competed at the New Orleans House of Blues during their 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Spirit of the Dream Celebration. Sarah was chosen to perform as one of ten finalists from over 100 written submissions in the poetry, rap and essay event.
Sarah was honored to be awarded first place as the opportunity was created by The International House of Blues Foundation (IHOBF) to give a voice to youth on the subjects of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Civil Rights Movement and the issues of race and equality that students face today.
Sarah's work received a certificate of participation, a $50 Barnes & Noble Gift Card and a DREAM Plaque created by visual artists Adam Farrington and Scott Smith.
