El Projecte Esculapi

Després de gairebé 100 anys de la seva descoberta, l'Esculapi necessitava una restauració. Amb aquest objectiu el 2006 nasqué el Projecte Esculapi que, a la vegada, constituïa una oportunitat única per documentar l'estàtua científicament. Per la seva singularitat, l'Esculapi ha generat al llarg del temps, molts dubtes entre els investigadors. Dubtes a l'entorn de la cronologia, del déu al que representava, i també al voltant de la seva execució.

Casi 100 años después de su descubrimiento, el Esculapio necesitaba una restauración. Con este objetivo, en 2006 nació el Proyecto Esculapio que, al mismo tiempo, constituía una oportunidad única para documentar la estatua científicamente. Por su singularidad, el Esculapio ha generado a lo largo del tiempo muchas dudas entre los investigadores. Dudas en torno a la cronología, al dios que representaba y también con respecto a su ejecución.

Almost 100 years after it was discovered, Asklepios needed restoration. With this aim in mind, the Asklepios Project was set up in 2006, also providing a unique opportunity to document the statue scientifically. Due to its singularity, Asklepios has raised a lot of doubts among researchers over the years. Doubts regarding its chronology, the god it represents and also how it had been made. The Restoration Department at the MNAC took charge of the technical side of the Project. A scientific team made up of experts from two museums, as well as a committee of specialists, regularly monitored the work and set out guidelines.
After various appraisals, it was decided to restore the last image the sculpture was believed to have had in ancient times. This meant restoring around 85 fragments that had been recovered during excavation, as well as a risky decision: to re-attach Asklepios' arms.
