Lyrics:

(God put a song in the heart of an angel and softly she sang it to me)
I get to thinking lots of times about back when I was a lad
Of the old homeplace where I grew up of the days both good and bad
My overalls were hand-me-downs my shoes were full of holes
I used to walk four miles to school every day through the rain the sleet and the cold
I've seen the nights when my daddy would cry
For the things that his family would need
But all he ever got was a badland farm and seven hungry mouths to feed
And yet and yet our homefire never flickered once
Cause when all these things went wrong
Mama took the hymn book down and mama sang a song
(What a friend we have in Jesus)
I've been rocked to sleep many a night to the tune of What a Friend
And come morning Rock of Ages would wake me gently once again
And when daddy would reach up and he'd take the Bible down
And he'd read it read it loud and long
And I always felt that maybe our house was blessed
When daddy would say mama sing a song
Sister left home first I guess and then Bob and then Tommy and then Dan
By then dad's hair was turning white and I had to be mama's little man
But it seemed that as daddy's back grew weak my mother's faith just grew strong
And those were the greatest days of all when mama sang a song
(Rock of ages cleft for me let me hide myself in Thee)
I guess the house is still standing I don't get to go back much anymore
No voice is left to fill those halls and no steps to grace the floor
For you see my mother sings in heaven now around God's golden throne
But I'll always believe that this world is a better place
Because one time my mama sang a song (precious mem'ries flod my soul

  • My Mother singes in HEAVEN NOW. Passed away on April 29, 2011. I'm still havin' a hard time with it. Every time I here this song it brings back the momories of my Mother. This was Her favorite song of Bill Anderson along with Po' Folks because She grew up very poor. I LOVE YOU MORE MOM, GOD BE WITH YOU....

  • @therifleman338 I know how you are feeling. I lost my Mom last year, the first months you feel like being homeless...and you can´t believe that she´s gone forever. My thoughts are with you, God bless you!

  • Three years ago, my mother died. The day before the funeral, the pastor asked what hymns we might like at the funeral. I suggested Patsy Clines, Just a Closer Walk With Thee for the opening hymn. My mom loved her music.

For the closing hymn, I brough a CD with this song on it. As you watch you mother lay in a casket, and hear this song, you then truly know how lucky you were to have your mother. So many people were teary eyed, and some were crying like babies. I think everyone related

  • @eddiebatmv Yes, I know exactly what you mean...My Mom passed away in March this year, and it was the hardest time I´ve ever was going through. No one can ever replace the loving heart of a Mom.

    God bless you!

  • A #1 hit for Bill Anderson on the Country & Western charts. It was the 59th #1 hit on the C&W charts in the Rock Era.

  • @Maribo33 Thanks for your help, and wonderful thoughts. My Mama told me one time, She went to a Bill Anderson concert, and He refused to sing (Mama sang a song) He said it was too personal. Toward the end of the concert He finely agreed to sing the song, only if there was absolute silence. My Mama said it was so quit you could hear a pin drop.Gotta go, Thanks once again, Mark

  • It's my birthday today, time to go talk to Mama. U see She normaly calls me, but I need to get used to the fact that She won't be doin' that anymore. GOD I MISS HER....RIP..KEEP LOOKIN' MAMA, ONE DAY I WILL BE RIGHT BESIDE YOU (SOON, HEART PROBLEMS MYSELF)

  • This is very moving and deep. I love it.
