No tourist or local is forced to go on that ride .. it is there for whoever wants to take it, its tinny part of a major picture, Madeira tourism
Please don't "knock" these men down with your derogatory comments they play a small part in our tourism industry and in Madeira as a tourism destination ...
Same as the Ladies selling flowers or the men selling fruit in Mercado dos Lavradores or fruit stall around town...etc etc..

I took that ride in the 1960's. It was awesome but we had coble stone roads instead of the smooth ones shown in the video. Our basket-men were outstanding in how they could turn and stop the basket. Just plain WOW !! This is a ride everyone should take when visiting Madeira. One of the best parts of the whole visit.

Well ... its lile me. I lived more than 15 years in Alkmaar (Dutch city where the famous cheesemarket is) .... but I have never went to see the cheesemarket.
